30 Days of Fandom Meme - Day 14

14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

I guess i should start by saying i'm not quite sure of the 'division' line between R and NC17

for purposes of my sites we've used the idea that as long as things are not GRAPHIC.. that specific body parts aren't mentioned.. that it's not too adult for my Gen sites...

as far as what i'm comfortable with...

I guess writing the vague scenes are better for me.. i like the fade to black for intimate moments...

as for violence... I guess the same applies... it's one thing to mention the general injuries but one blood starts spurting and shooting from veins or if someone describes a brutal attack in brutal detail... i think that crosses into 'adult' or R/NC17 :D

I think that is a good way to see the limit. I find this whole thing a bit complicated, because it all depends on the person's sensibility, and I dare say it has a lot to do with the person's national culture. What can be considered totally out of bounds in a country could be perfectly normal andi people don't get shocked in another. It's like swearing. Saying certain expressions could be totally outrageous in a culture and those same expression could be just everyday expressions in another. For example, here in Spain swearwords are of everyday use I don't like using them, but a great majority of people use them in their vocabulary, and the way they are used can sometimes an insult, and sometimes they can be a praise. So I guess it's important to be very careful and 'walk on tiptoes' when you are writing subjects about which people can take offence. That is usual my main fear.
